ART & DESIGN are WORK

So what is the difference between them? Such a good question. My milieu is a combination of crossovers. Most recently, I am in love with the work of Ed Ruscha, so words are becoming more fun. The discovery of miniature cupcakes is responsible for the recent photos I created in my basement in the cold light of winter. Cy Twombly’s photographs amaze me. Some of my other favorite artists are Imi Knoebel, Anselm Kiefer, Maira Kalman, Giorgio Morandi, Bruno Munari, Robert Irwin, Blexbolex, Pat Metheny, Keith Jarrett and Jimmy Giuffre. My favorite magazine is The World of Interiors because of the diverse environments and talent displayed in its pages – everything from elegant Airstream trailers to run-down Bauhaus classics, the transformation of junk into art by African artisans, or shipping containers converted into homes.

CAKE

The serendipity of winter light in her basement, miniature cupcakes from a local shop and the various figures in her basement caused Karen to grab her camera. The result is CAKE, a collection of amazing images that became fine art prints, an art booklet and a show in a French patisserie. This one deserves to become a coffee table book!

Product Concept

Karen’s bright idea! The product, the name, the graphics, the motif, the packaging, the works.  Half way through, she changed the material and began to adapt the graphics to match.  This project aside needs to be developed!

Product Packaging

Packaging design concepts for glassware products for department stores such as Macy’s and Bloomingdales.  An essential element of the mission was to make sure that when the packages were displayed, the result would be a striking sculptural presence and all panels could be read simultaneously.
